The Story

The most memorable game of the Calcio Storico Fiorentino was played on February 17, 1530, in defiance of the imperial troops sent by Charles V, as the city was under siege. Its origin is still unclear, usually attributes to the Roman. It was mostly played during Carnival or relevant events such as important weddings.

The Calcio Fiorentino was stopped in 1739. After almost 200 years, the “Fiorentini” decided to resume the event: it was 1930. It was defined the date of the tournament (during the San Giovanni festivity), squads – four: The Azzurri (Blues) of Santa Croce, the Rossi (Reds) of Santa Maria Novella, the Bianchi (Whites) of Santo Spirito, and the Verdi (Greens) of San Giovanni -, with 27 participants per game -, then redesigned costumes.

The Rules

What’s about rules? It consists of matches last 50 minutes and is played on a field covered in sand (approximately 100 m × 50 m or 109 by 55 yards). As in soccer or football, a white line separates the field into two parts, which both end with a goal net.

As already noted, every team has 27 players and there aren’t substitutions for injured or expelled players. Of the teams are part 4 goalkeepers (aka Datori Indietro), three fullbacks (Datori Innanzi), five halfbacks (Sconciatori), and 15 forward (Corridori).

The event starts with a shot from a small cannon, also known as colubrine, while the game officially begins when the “Pallaio” kicks the ball toward the centerline. Then the 15 forwards begin to fight, with a mix of punching, kicking, tripping, tackling, and wrestling. The goal of each team is to try to get the ball into the opponents’ goal net, aka “Caccia”. The sides change after every goal. But it’s so important to be accurate while shooting the ball: in fact, if you miss the net, the opposing team gets a half “Caccia”. After 50 minutes, the team with the most “Cacce” scored win the game.

Netflix “Home Game”

The Calcio Storico Fiorentino raised a big success as part of the Netflix docu-series “Home Game”, which described it as “rugby meets mixed martial arts“. It is on the first episode, released on 26 June 2020.
